IME is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to mobilizing resources and implementing strategic programs that uplift underserved communities across the United States and African nations. Our mission centers on advancing equitable healthcare by enhancing the quality of medical services, expanding access to care, and reducing the financial barriers that prevent individuals from receiving the treatment they need.
IME traces its origins to a series of medical missions to Africa organized by Basil Medical Corporation (BMC), a U.S.-based company established in 1991 focused on procuring and supplying medical equipment and technology. In response to requests from host governments, BMC recruited African American physicians to travel to various African nations, where they shared their clinical expertise with local healthcare professionals, provided medical treatment, and contributed meaningfully to regional capacity-building initiatives.
The missions yielded significant results, demonstrating the transformative outcomes that can be achieved when African and African American communities unite to confront shared healthcare challenges, advancing the health and well-being of Africans both on the continent and throughout the Diaspora. Building on this success, the governments of participating African nations sought BMC's support in convening conferences to establish frameworks for regional collaboration and develop coordinated strategies to address persistent health challenges.
Gov. Wilder welcomed the Tanzanian Ambassador, Nyirabu, during his visit to Richmond, VA. Sponsored by BMC.
IME's mission is to bring together healthcare professionals, policymakers, educators, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and ICT experts from Africa, the U.S., and the African Diaspora to design and implement innovative and effective programs to enhance and extend healthcare delivery in Africa and underserved communities in the U.S.
Public, private, and academic partnerships are a vital mechanism for African countries to address their multifaceted healthcare challenges successfully.
The convergence of medical and information technology, the evolution of international policy frameworks, and the shifting landscape of public and private funding present unprecedented opportunities to transform healthcare delivery on a global scale.
IME welcomes collaboration with African governments to strengthen institutional capacity and advance the delivery of quality, equitable healthcare services with a particular focus on reaching the most underserved communities.
